Learn the best occasions to choose a mini session

This past week I launched my first ever mini session offerings (dances around kitchen).  After years of delays, ahem – covid, kids, etc, I finally did it and I couldn’t be more excited.

Then one mother reached out with some questions.  She asked, “I’ve never had professional photos taken before and I was just wondering if you help with posing, I have no idea how to stand or where to put my hands.”

This is such a common concern and I assure all my clients that I handle all of that.  I give my clients a little crash course before we start our session that includes exactly what to do with your hands, ways to stand, where to look, among many other things.  For my mini session clients I also send over a posing video so they know what to expect during their session.  More prepared clients = better photos and more variety.

But mini sessions aren’t for everyone

Mini sessions aren’t for everyone, allow me to explain.  I usually recommend someone experience a full session with me first before diving into mini sessions.  I personally have a love/hate relationship with mini sessions.  They maximize time, they’re cost effective for families, they’re easier for me to batch edit while still producing a really nice product for my clients – all great things.  What I don’t love is how impersonal and rushed they can feel.  I love to chit chat, play with your kiddos, and get to know you as a family.  If I’ve never met you before a mini session, I will barely know you at the end of the 15 minutes we have together.  I’ll still produce beautiful images of you, but I love helping display each person’s unique personality and how they interact with their family.  If I don’t know you’re family prior to the shoot, it’s really hard to bring that to life during the mini session.

Who a mini session is perfect for

I meet most of my clients when they’re expecting their first child.  They reach out to me for a maternity session to document their growing belly along with the excitement and nervousness of the days to come.  I typically recommend a full session (60 minutes) or a Maternity/Newborn package that will capture their growing belly and their new little baby.  Clients typically return for a half session (30 minutes) at 6 month or 1 year before becoming an annual family photo client.  When toddler years hit, the attention spans wane and mini sessions become the PERFECT option.  I usually host these with kiddos in mind, so there are places to run and be silly, and always include an adventure or project for the kiddos to focus on.
